I save crosswords going way back. One from the Independent 1998 also had one of your chess puzzles. Apparently you had endorsed a three move stalemate end game by Karpov which he could have won in two – and you postbag was full! Karpov was running out of time and you made out some case that to play a three move draw was quicker than forcing a more time consuming two move win, with its inherent risks of fumbling (in anticipation) and even knocking pieces over. You later acknowledged that even Karpov could commit such a blunder when you found out he had 7 seconds left! Perhaps there’s a cavity somewhere in your mind which recalls it, or maybe it’s even become a ’cause celebre!’ I’m no expert – perhaps you can tell.
