He didn’t buy much (!) but liked to chat – not always about chess. He was a joy for a youngster like me to talk with and I really enjoyed his visits. I knew Elaine from my playing in her Middlesex team. When I was about to leave London in 1964, she phoned to thank me for playing and passed on her and David’s best wishes for the future – two very nice people!

He shared this, I believe, with some others who faced the war – such as the Bruces – a sense of perspective their reward thereafter I suppose, I hope. I met him once, nice chap, genuine. When his wife died I contacted Wanda and her response was perhaps shy and certainly modest.
