I knew Geoffrey Diggle from 1959 and into the 60’s when he was a first team member of Lloyds Bank Chess Club. The team won the championship of the London Banks Chess League for 10 consecutive years at that time. Our top board was Harold Felce.
I was team captain for a number of years.
My outstanding memory of him was that he was a superb after-dinner speaker. We had an annual dinner in Lombard Street after a Chess match. Harry Golombek was our guest of honour for several years. Geoffrey
was the star speaker.
I remember a discussion with him about Gilbert and Sullivan. He was a fan of Gilbert’s writing.
“She may very well pass for 43 in the dusk
with the light behind her”
He was good company and I feel privileged
to have known him
