As late as 1976 Haygarth was being pushed/induced into possible professionalism. He didn’t bite which surely was the right decision! He completely disappeared from chess, playing in the Major Open at Brighton 1980 and getting a sad 50% prior to exit. Like PN Lee he was to win the British to the surprise of Penrose watchers, Jonathan Penrose clearly approaching GM strength in that time. With David Adams and Brian Eley he was to lead the Yorkshire County team, but he never played a Hastings Premier much less a Lloyds Bank Masters.
